Orthotics

Orthotics is the clinical science involved in the assessment, prescription, application and education of an appropriate orthosis for a client. An orthosis is the true term for a brace, calliper or appliance that is designed and fitting to the body to achieve one or more of the following goals:

  • Control biomechanical alignment
  • Protect and support a healing injury
  • Assist rehabilitation
  • Reduce pain
  • Increase mobility
  • Increase independence

The Prosthetic Workshop at the Centre offers above knee and below knee prostheses for amputees and is the only such facility in Jamaica. It has in the past been upgraded through collaborative efforts with many international foundations (including UNESCO) and universities. It is staffed by both able-bodied and disabled people trained in the making of prosthesis.

The orthotic workshop used to make walkers, braces, calipers and other devices to assist in ambulation of disabled people as well as for orthopaedic conditions. It is currently not able to function to its full potential due to shortage of skilled personnel. Jamaica. It is staffed by both able-bodied and disabled people trained in the making of prosthesis.
